VMU Gas Detection System

Northampton

THE OPPORTUNITY

KBS was honoured to have been given the opportunity to win yet another contract from our client John Lewis & Partners. The Vehicle Maintenance Unit at our clients’ distribution centre in Northampton was one of the first of its kind for the partnership as they embarked on upgrading their diesel trucks to more efficient versions. When the main contractors of this case, Woodward & Co approached us, they specified the electrical designs and installations to be produced by a particular company, Synergy Building Services.

THE DELIVERY

With a lot of firsts this project did not come without its challenges. With the new trucks being powered by methane, which is not only more energy efficient but also very flammable & explosive, detection is therefore paramount. During the 4-week construction programme KBS worked alongside other contractors to design, install & commission a gas detection system that, on detection, shuts down all power to the building and starts a series of extractor fans and signals a siren. However, we are proud to state that even through certain hardships, we were successful in effectively handling the work with all safety protocols.

THE OUTCOME

The project was successfully delivered on time without any time constraints or interruptions while complying with all the client requirements. This led to us being appointed again by John Lewis & Partnersfor a similar project in Brinklow.
